The tricone bit is usually used in soft to hard formations when the dth hammer loses of its effectiveness or when the user lacks such equipment.
The drilling with tricone bit is generally made by means of a mud pump.
There are two families of roller cone bits:
- Steel tooth for soft to medium formation
- Tungsten carbide for medium to very hard formation
